This appears to be soapstone, a material traditionally used for carved decorative pieces in India, although I have not had the stone professionally identified. The creamy stone is carved with openwork floral designs around the sides, while the lid is set with pieces of pink, green and dark stone forming a single flower.
For an altar, I love small boxes like this as intention vessels. Write down what you're calling in and tuck the petition inside. Keep a charm or crystal connected to a particular working in it. Use it for something you're trying to nurture quietly rather than leaving it sitting out in the open.
The flower makes this one particularly fitting for intentions involving love, beauty, creativity, confidence, personal growth and anything you're ready to see bloom. It could also make a lovely little container for offerings or keepsakes connected to someone you love.
Or put your rings in it. The universe will cope.
Mystical Uses
Use it to hold written intentions, tiny crystals, charms, spell ingredients, divination pieces, small offerings or personal talismans.
You could also turn the box itself into part of a working: place your intention inside, add whatever symbolic object feels appropriate, close the lid and give the thing some time to grow.
