I have no idea who these five gentlemen were or why they had their portrait taken together.
Brothers? Friends? Business partners? A secret society with extremely reasonable membership requirements?
Or perhaps their 1890s barbershop rendition of Everybody (Backstreet's Back) simply never made it onto wax cylinder.
Whatever the story, this is a fantastic old group photograph. Five young men pose together in formal suits, white collars and bow ties, with the two mustached gentlemen apparently representing the mature wing of the operation. Unlike the more common individual cabinet portraits, there's an entire unidentified relationship here to wonder about.
And that's really what makes these old photographs fun. You don't need to know their names to give them a second life.
Display them among antique books and curiosities, add them to a Victorian gallery wall, bring them into your Halloween decor, or adopt the entire group for your own intuitive or divination practice. Give them names. Decide which one caused all the trouble. I already have suspicions.
