What Type of Psychic Reading Do I Need?

If you’ve decided you want a psychic reading and then tried to figure out which kind to book, congratulations. You have now entered the Cheesecake Factory menu portion of the psychic experience.

Psychic reading. Tarot reading. Intuitive reading. Mediumship. Clairvoyant reading. Past-life reading. Astrology. Akashic Records. Love reading. Career reading. Predictive reading. General reading.

You started out thinking, “Something is going on with Dave and I need to know what the hell it is.”

Twenty minutes later you’re wondering whether Dave requires a clairvoyant, a clairsentient, a tarot reader or somebody with access to the Akashic Records.

Let’s make this considerably easier.

Instead of starting with what the reading is called, start with what you’re actually trying to find out.

That’s usually the fastest way to figure out what type of psychic reading you need.

“Something Is Going On and I Want to Know What I’m Not Seeing”

This is the big one.

Something feels off in your relationship. Your workplace has gotten weird. Somebody’s behavior changed. You keep getting the feeling that there’s more happening than you’re being told, but you can’t quite figure out what it is.

This is where a general psychic, intuitive or tarot-based reading can be useful.

You’re not necessarily asking for a prediction. You’re trying to understand the situation you’re already standing in.

What’s influencing it? What aren’t you seeing? What is the other dynamic here? Why does this feel different? Is there actually something going on, or have you been staring at it for so long that everything now looks suspicious?

This is the kind of reading I personally do a lot because human beings are extremely good at sensing that something has changed and equally good at talking themselves out of what they’ve noticed.

You don’t necessarily need a specialized type of psychic for this. You need someone who is good at reading situations, not merely firing off future predictions.

“I Want to Know What’s Coming”

Now we’re talking about a predictive reading.

Maybe you want to know what’s developing over the next several months. Maybe there’s a specific situation and you’re wondering where it appears to be heading. Maybe life has been suspiciously quiet and you’d like to know whether the universe is preparing a lovely surprise or loading a piano above your head.

Predictive readings look at trajectory.

That’s an important word because I don’t consider the future a FedEx package that’s already been shipped and simply hasn’t arrived yet.

A psychic may see what appears likely based on what’s happening now. Relationships have momentum. Careers have momentum. Decisions create momentum. People are moving toward things all the time, whether they’re conscious of it or not.

That’s readable.

But people also make different choices. Circumstances change. Somebody gets an offer. Somebody backs out. Somebody meets someone. Somebody finally gets sick of Dave.

So if what you really want is “Tell me what appears to be coming,” look for a reader who is comfortable making predictions but doesn’t sell them as unchangeable appointments with destiny.

“I Have a Decision to Make and I Cannot Look at This Thing Anymore”

Sometimes you’ve thought about a decision so much that you’ve reached the point where another pros-and-cons list may result in violence.

This can be a good situation for a psychic or tarot reading, but I would be careful about what you’re asking the reader to do.

You aren’t hiring someone to run your life.

A useful decision reading can explore what you may not be considering, what seems to surround each option, what appears likely if you continue on the current path, and whether there are factors you’re overlooking because you’re standing too close to the problem.

That’s different from:

“Tell me whether I should quit my job.”

I can look at the job. I can look at what’s happening around you. I can look at the possibilities that appear to be developing and what might happen if you stay versus leave.

But at the end of the reading, unfortunately, I cannot put on your pants and go live your life for you.

You’ll still have to decide.

A good reading should make that decision clearer, not transfer ownership of it to the psychic.

“Someone I Love Died and I Want to Connect With Them”

You’re looking for mediumship.

This distinction gets muddled constantly, but a psychic and a medium aren’t automatically the same thing.

Psychic work generally involves receiving intuitive information about people, situations, patterns or possibilities. Mediumship specifically involves attempting communication with people who have died.

Some psychics are also mediums.

Some aren’t.

Some mediums use tarot cards. Some don’t.

Some psychics may occasionally receive information that seems connected to someone who has died without offering mediumship as a service at all.

This is why reading the person’s actual website matters more than seeing the word PSYCHIC and assuming the entire supernatural Costco is included with membership.

If your primary reason for booking is that you hope to connect with a deceased loved one, find someone who specifically says they do mediumship.

Don’t book a career tarot reader and spend the appointment wondering why Grandma hasn’t arrived.

“I Think Something From a Past Life Is Affecting Me”

Then you want someone who specifically works with past lives, whether they call that a past-life psychic reading, Akashic Records reading, past-life tarot or something similar.

People seek these readings for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes there’s an unexplained attachment to a place or historical period. Sometimes there’s a recurring relationship pattern. Sometimes there are dreams, fears or experiences that feel oddly familiar.

And sometimes people are simply curious.

Different practitioners approach past-life work very differently. Some use psychic impressions. Some use tarot. Some work with the Akashic Records. Others use regression techniques, which is an entirely different experience from receiving a psychic reading.

So this is another case where you want to look at how the person actually works, not merely the service title.

“Past life reading” can describe several very different things once you get inside the building.

“Something Weird Keeps Happening to Me”

Oh, hello. My people.

Maybe you keep knowing things before they happen, having the same dream, noticing what seem like signs, or experiencing something strange after somebody died that you’ve never been able to explain. Maybe you feel an unusual connection to a person, place or object. Or maybe you don’t even know what category your experience belongs in. You just know something happened and the usual explanations aren’t scratching the itch.

This is where I’d look for a psychic who is comfortable with interpretation and discernment, not merely prediction. You don’t necessarily need somebody to tell you what happens next. You need someone willing to look at the experience with you and ask, what the hell was that?

I especially like this kind of work because not every weird experience needs to be promoted immediately to A MESSAGE FROM SPIRIT. Sometimes there’s a perfectly ordinary explanation, and sometimes there isn’t. The interesting part is figuring out which one we’re dealing with.

“I Don’t Have a Question. I Just Want to Know What Comes Through”

That’s usually a general psychic reading, and yes, those are a real thing.

You don’t necessarily need to arrive with a crisis, a Dave or a laminated list of questions. A general reading may look at what’s most active around you now, what themes appear to be developing, where your attention seems to be going and what may be coming into focus next.

Just understand that “general” means you’re giving the reader more freedom about where the reading goes. If what you desperately want to know is whether Dave is moving out, don’t book a general reading, sit silently and then become irritated because the psychic spent twenty minutes talking about your career. Tell them about Dave. Psychics are allowed context.

So Where Does Tarot Fit Into All of This?

This is where I think people get unnecessarily confused because tarot is a tool, not necessarily the subject of the reading.

I can use tarot to look at your relationship, career, a decision, a prediction, a strange situation, a person, a pattern or what appears to be developing next. Someone else may do all of those things without using cards at all.

A tarot reader also isn’t automatically psychic. Some people read tarot primarily through traditional card meanings and symbolism, while others combine those meanings with intuition or psychic information. Some psychics use cards as a jumping-off point, while others use them as confirmation for information they’re already receiving. There isn’t one official method.

So when you see tarot reading, don’t assume it means a completely separate category from psychic reading. Sometimes the difference is simply how the reader gets the information.

What About Clairvoyants, Clairaudients and Clairsentients?

These words describe different ways people say they receive psychic information. Clairvoyance generally refers to psychic seeing or visual impressions, clairaudience to information experienced through hearing, and clairsentience to sensing or feeling information. There are other “clairs,” because apparently the psychic world also enjoys submenus.

You usually do not need to figure out which clair you require before booking someone. If Dave is acting suspicious, you don’t need to determine whether his nonsense would be best detected visually, auditorily or through someone’s left elbow.

Look at what the psychic actually reads on, how they describe their work and whether the problems they help people explore sound anything like yours. Let the psychic worry about how their information arrives.

What About Astrology and Numerology?

These are different systems. An astrologer interprets astrological information such as birth charts, planetary placements, transits and timing, while numerology uses numbers associated with things like birth dates and names to interpret patterns and cycles.

Some psychics also practice astrology or numerology, but neither one requires psychic ability in order to practice it. If what fascinates you is your birth chart, planetary timing or numerological cycles, choose somebody who actually specializes in that system.

Don’t assume every psychic can do astrology because both subjects occasionally appear in stores that smell like incense. I cannot fix your sink because Home Depot also sells refrigerators

Do You Need a Love Psychic or Career Psychic?

Maybe.

But don’t let marketing categories make this more complicated than it is.

A psychic who specializes in relationships may be particularly experienced with relationship dynamics. Someone who focuses on business or career may be especially good at reading professional situations.

Specialization can absolutely be useful.

But “love psychic” isn’t necessarily a different psychic ability from “career psychic.”

Sometimes it’s simply the subject the reader has chosen to specialize in.

This is another reason I would choose the reader before getting overly attached to the label.

I’d rather have an excellent psychic who understands my question than somebody whose website happens to contain the exact category name I Googled.

What If You Still Don’t Know Which Psychic Reading You Need?

Then stop worrying about the name for a minute and think about what you would actually say if somebody asked, “What do you want help with?”

Maybe it’s, “I want to know why this relationship suddenly feels different,” or “I want to know what’s coming next.” Maybe you want to connect with your dad, can’t decide whether to stay or leave, keep having a weird experience you can’t explain, or don’t have a specific question at all and just want someone to look around and tell you what they see.

There. Now you know what you’re shopping for.

Find a reader whose work actually addresses that problem. Then look at their approach, their boundaries, the tools they use, whether they work live or prerecorded, and whether the way they talk about psychic ability makes you feel comfortable giving them money.

That’s considerably more useful than trying to diagnose yourself with a required form of clairvoyance before you’ve even booked the appointment.

The Right Psychic Reading Starts With the Problem, Not the Label

You don’t need to become an expert in psychic terminology before getting a psychic reading. You don’t need to understand every clair or figure out whether tarot, oracle cards or no cards at all would be the optimal delivery system for the mystery of Dave. You need to know what you’re trying to understand and then find someone whose work is designed to look at it.

And if you’re still not completely sure what category your question belongs in, that’s okay too. Human lives rarely arrive neatly labeled RELATIONSHIP, CAREER, PAST LIFE or SUPERNATURAL NONSENSE. Sometimes the whole reason you’re getting a reading is because you don’t know what the hell you’re looking at yet.

That’s a perfectly good place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best type of psychic reading for a beginner?

There isn’t one universally best type. Start with what you want help understanding. If you have a specific life situation or simply want general insight, a psychic or tarot-based reading may be a straightforward place to begin. If you specifically want contact with someone who died, look for mediumship.

What’s the difference between a psychic reading and a tarot reading?

Psychic reading describes intuitive information received by a reader, while tarot is a system of cards that can be used to explore a question or situation. Some tarot readers identify as psychic and combine both approaches; others read primarily through the cards’ traditional symbolism.

What’s the difference between a psychic and a medium?

Psychics generally focus on intuitive information about people, situations and possibilities. Mediums specifically attempt communication with deceased people. Some practitioners do both, but being psychic doesn’t automatically mean someone offers mediumship.

What type of psychic reading is best for love?

Look for a reader who is comfortable exploring relationships and the specific issue you want help understanding. You don’t necessarily need someone labeled a “love psychic.” The reader’s approach and experience with relationship questions matter more than the marketing category.

What type of psychic reading can predict the future?

Psychics and tarot readers may offer predictive readings that explore likely future developments and the current trajectory of a situation. Predictions aren’t guarantees, because circumstances and people’s choices can change.

Do I need to know what type of reading I want before I book?

Not necessarily. Knowing what you want help understanding is usually more important than knowing the correct psychic terminology. Read the practitioner’s description of their work and make sure your question falls within what they actually offer.
