How to Prepare for a Psychic Reading (You Don’t Need to Do Anything Weird)

If you’ve booked a psychic reading and are now wondering whether you’re supposed to meditate, cleanse your aura or spend the morning avoiding negative thoughts, I’ve got excellent news: you can just show up.

Or, if you’ve ordered a prerecorded reading, you don’t even have to do that.

You do not need to light a candle at the exact moment your psychic begins reading for you. You don’t need to sit somewhere quietly with your eyes closed. You don’t need to hold a crystal, raise your vibration or make sure you’re in a particularly receptive energetic state at 3:34 on a Wednesday afternoon because that’s when your reader happens to pull out the cards.

I’ve actually seen people request things like this with prerecorded readings, and I promise you, it is unnecessary. Go to Target. Take a nap. Argue with your insurance company. Your psychic does not need you sitting somewhere psychically buffering while they work.

What is helpful is being open to the reading itself. That means being willing to hear what comes through without deciding beforehand that there is only one acceptable answer. Beyond that, preparing for a psychic reading is much more practical than magical.

Here’s what will actually help you get more out of it.

Know What You Want Help With

You don’t need the perfect question, and you certainly don’t need a list of 47 spiritually impressive questions prepared in advance. You should, however, have some idea why you’re getting the reading.

Maybe something in your relationship isn’t making sense. Maybe you’re considering a career change. Maybe you’re trying to make a decision and have thought about it so much that your own brain has become useless. Maybe you keep experiencing something strange and want another perspective on it. Or maybe you simply want to know what appears to be developing next.

That’s enough.

If there are specific questions you absolutely want answered, write them down so you don’t forget them. This is particularly useful during a live reading because conversations have a way of wandering into places you didn’t expect. Something interesting comes up, you follow it, and forty minutes later you suddenly remember the question that caused you to book the reading in the first place.

For a prerecorded reading, having clear questions is helpful for a different reason: you’re not there for the reader to ask follow-up questions. The clearer you can be about what you actually want to understand, the easier it is for the reader to make sure they’re addressing it.

That doesn’t mean you need to figure out the perfect wording. “My job has gotten weird and I’m trying to figure out whether it’s time to leave” tells me considerably more about what you need than a beautifully polished question about “aligning with your highest professional timeline.”

Just tell me what’s actually bothering you.

Give Enough Context, But Please Don’t Send the Entire Case File

Psychics vary on how much information they like to receive beforehand. Personally, I want enough context to understand what we’re looking at without knowing every detail of the situation before I start.

There’s a practical reason for this. I want room to read what I’m getting instead of unconsciously following the story you’ve already told me.

If you’re asking about your job, telling me that you’ve been there eight years, management recently changed and you’re wondering whether it’s time to leave is useful context. Sending me screenshots of seventeen Slack conversations, the organizational chart and Brenda’s LinkedIn activity is probably more than I need.

On the other hand, withholding every useful detail because you want to “test” the psychic isn’t particularly helpful either.

If the mysterious man you’re asking me about is actually your husband of twenty-three years, you can tell me that. Making me spend part of the reading establishing information you already know doesn’t make the reading more legitimate. It just uses time we could have spent looking at the thing you actually wanted to know.

There’s a middle ground between telling the psychic absolutely nothing and preparing a federal prosecution.

Aim for that.

You Don’t Have to Be Calm, Happy or High-Vibe

This one matters because people usually get psychic readings when something is bothering them.

If you’re upset, you’re upset.

If you’re anxious about the situation, you’re anxious about the situation.

If you’ve been thinking about it constantly for three days and would very much like your brain to shut the hell up, that’s probably part of the reason you’re getting a reading.

You do not have to transform yourself into a serene spiritual woodland creature before somebody can read for you.

I don’t believe having a bad day prevents a psychic from getting information. I don’t think being nervous closes an energetic steel door that your reader now has to psychically pick the lock on. And I definitely don’t think you should worry that one negative thought you had in the car ruined your reading before it started.

What matters much more is whether you’re willing to consider what comes through.

Being open doesn’t mean being calm. It means you’re not requiring the reading to tell you one particular thing.

That’s a very different standard.

Don’t Decide the Answer Before the Reading Starts

This is probably the most important preparation you can do, and it requires absolutely no crystals.

Try not to go into a reading needing the answer to be yes.

Or no.

Or that he’s coming back.

Or that you’re definitely getting the job.

Or that your intuition was absolutely right.

Or that your mother-in-law is secretly the entire problem, although statistically I suppose we shouldn’t rule anything out.

If you’ve already decided what the answer has to be, you’re not really asking for information anymore. You’re asking for confirmation.

That puts both you and the reader in a bad position because anything that contradicts the answer you wanted is going to feel wrong before you’ve even had time to consider it.

You don’t have to be completely neutral. You’re a person, not Switzerland. Of course you have preferences, fears and hopes about the thing you’re asking.

Just leave enough room for the answer to surprise you.

That’s what I mean when I ask someone to be open to a reading.

Check What the Psychic Will and Won’t Read On

Do this before you pay.

Every psychic has boundaries, and they aren’t all the same.

Some readers won’t answer health questions. Some won’t read about legal situations. Some have boundaries around pregnancy, death, financial decisions, missing persons or third parties. Some communicate with deceased loved ones; others don’t. Some will read about timing and others avoid it entirely.

There isn’t one universal Psychic Employee Handbook we’re all issued when we receive our imaginary badges.

Check the reader’s policies before booking, particularly if the entire reason you’re getting the reading involves a subject that readers commonly restrict.

You don’t want to spend money, submit your question and then discover the psychic won’t read on the one thing you came to ask.

And if someone is promising definitive medical diagnoses, legal outcomes or guaranteed financial results through psychic information, I’d personally be less concerned about preparing for the reading and more concerned about backing away from it.

Know What Kind of Reading You Bought

This sounds painfully obvious, but it’s worth checking.

Is the reading live or prerecorded? Is it video, audio, email or chat? How long is it supposed to be? Do you need to submit questions beforehand? Can you ask follow-up questions? Will you receive a recording afterward?

A prerecorded reading and a live reading are different experiences.

With a live reading, you can respond in real time, clarify something and follow an unexpected thread immediately. With a prerecorded reading, the reader has uninterrupted space to work through what they’re getting, and you have the advantage of being able to replay the reading later.

Neither format requires you to be energetically present at the same time as the psychic.

If I record your reading at 3:34 p.m. and you happen to be buying toilet paper at Costco, we’re fine.

Really.

Don’t Treat the Reading Like an Exam

There is nothing wrong with wanting evidence that the person you’ve hired can actually read.

There is also a difference between healthy skepticism and deliberately sabotaging the experience to see whether the psychic survives the obstacle course.

You don’t need to plant false information. You don’t need to pretend someone is your coworker when they’re actually your husband. You don’t need to withhold every piece of context and sit silently thinking, “Well, if she’s really psychic, she’ll know.”

A psychic reading is supposed to help you.

If you spend half of it administering a test, you’ve used half of something you paid for trying to prove whether you should have paid for it.

This is also why choosing your reader beforehand matters. Read their website. Look at how they describe their work. Check their policies. Watch or read some of their public content if they have it. Make sure their approach doesn’t make you want to crawl out of your own skin.

Do that research before the reading so you can use the actual reading for what you came for.

Give Yourself Time to Think About What You Heard

You don’t have to decide whether every piece of a reading was correct five minutes after it ends.

Some things make immediate sense. Some don’t. Some become clearer later because something happens that gives them context. And sometimes something simply never resonates with you.

That’s okay.

If your reading is recorded, listen to it again later. This is one of the reasons I like recorded readings. People hear more the second time because they’re no longer waiting nervously for the answer to the question that’s been occupying their brain for the last week.

Take what was useful. Sit with anything that surprised you. Keep your own judgment intact.

A psychic reading isn’t supposed to replace your ability to think. Ideally, it gives you something new to think with.

So What Do You Actually Need to Do Before a Psychic Reading?

Very little, honestly.

Know what you want help understanding. Write down anything you’re afraid you’ll forget. Give the reader enough context to understand the situation. Check their boundaries and make sure you know what kind of reading you’ve booked.

Then be open to hearing what comes through.

You don’t need a ritual. You don’t need perfect energy. You don’t need to meditate unless you happen to enjoy meditating. You don’t need to sit quietly waiting for your prerecorded reading to occur in another time zone.

And you definitely don’t need to worry that being nervous, cranky, distracted or standing in the cereal aisle somehow makes you psychically unavailable.

The psychic can do their job.

You just need to let them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to meditate before a psychic reading?

No. If meditating helps you relax or organize your thoughts, there’s nothing wrong with doing it, but it isn’t a requirement for receiving a psychic reading. Your ability to sit silently without thinking about laundry is not an entrance exam.

Should I tell a psychic what my question is beforehand?

For a prerecorded reading, you’ll usually need to provide your question or the situation you’d like the reader to explore. For a live reading, this varies by reader. Either way, you don’t need to provide every detail of the story for the reader to work with your question.

Do I need to be available while a psychic records my reading?

No. With a prerecorded reading, you do not need to be awake, meditating, concentrating on the reader or doing anything else at the exact time they’re working. Listen to the reading when it’s convenient for you.

Can being anxious affect a psychic reading?

Being nervous or emotionally invested in your question doesn’t automatically prevent a psychic from reading for you. What can make the experience less useful is being so committed to one particular answer that you’re unwilling to consider anything else.

Should I write down questions before my reading?

If you have specific things you want answered, absolutely. A short list can help you remember what matters, especially during a live reading. Just don’t worry about phrasing every question perfectly; knowing what you’re actually trying to understand is much more important.
