What Can a Psychic Reading Actually Tell You?
If you’ve never had a psychic reading before, you may be wondering what the hell you’re actually supposed to get out of one. Is someone going to predict your future, tell you who you’re going to marry, or give you a date when your entire life suddenly falls into place? Probably not, and frankly, I’d be suspicious of anyone promising you that.
A good psychic reading is much more useful when you stop thinking of it as someone handing you a script for your future and start thinking of it as another way of looking at something you can’t see clearly from where you’re standing. That’s usually why people come to me in the first place. There’s something happening in their life that they can’t quite get their arms around, and they’ve reached the point where thinking about it harder isn’t producing any new information.
A Psychic Reading Can Help You See What’s Happening Underneath a Situation
Sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t have enough information. It’s that you have too much of it. You’ve replayed the conversation, analyzed the text message, made the pros and cons list, talked to your friend, thought about it in the shower and revisited it at two in the morning, when absolutely nothing productive has ever happened. After all of that, you’re somehow still standing in exactly the same place.
This is one of the places where a psychic reading can be genuinely useful because it offers another perspective on the situation. When I read, I’m looking at what’s influencing the situation, what patterns are showing up, where things appear to be moving and whether there’s something important being overlooked. I’m also interested in what you’re giving too much weight to, because sometimes the thing taking up the most space in your head isn’t actually the most important part of what’s happening.
The useful part of a reading isn’t always learning something completely shocking. Sometimes it’s finally seeing how several things you’ve already noticed fit together.
A Reading Can Help When Something Feels Off
This is one of the biggest reasons people seek readings. Nothing has necessarily happened that you can point to, you don’t have proof of anything, and everyone around you may think everything looks perfectly normal. Still, you can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t quite right.
That doesn’t automatically mean your intuition has uncovered an enormous hidden conspiracy. Fear can feel convincing. Anxiety can feel convincing. Past experiences can also make us particularly sensitive to situations that resemble ones we’ve been hurt by before. On the other hand, sometimes you really are noticing something before you can consciously explain what you’ve noticed.
A reading gives us a way to explore what’s underneath that feeling without beginning with the assumption that your worst fear must be true. That’s an important distinction, because the goal of a reading shouldn’t be finding somebody who will confirm the story you’ve already created. The goal is to look at the situation and see what actually comes through.
A Psychic Reading Can Show You Patterns
This is where readings become much more interesting to me than simple predictions. Maybe you keep ending up in versions of the same relationship, or every time you’re about to make a major change, you suddenly become convinced it’s a terrible idea. Maybe the same kind of conflict follows you from job to job, or something keeps happening in your life and you genuinely cannot understand why.
Patterns are difficult to recognize when you’re living inside them because every individual incident feels like its own thing. A reading can sometimes pull the camera back far enough to show you the larger pattern instead of only the latest episode. Once you can see that pattern, you have considerably more power over what you decide to do with it.
Can a Psychic Reading Tell You the Future?
I do believe psychic readings can look ahead, but I don’t believe the future is a train schedule. There are situations where the direction of something looks very clear and others where several possibilities are still very much in play. People make choices, circumstances change, you change, someone else changes, or somebody does exactly what they’ve been doing for the last six years because apparently we’re committed to the bit.
What I’m interested in is the trajectory that’s forming now. If nothing changes, where does this appear to be heading? What possibility looks strongest? Is something beginning, ending, stalling or shifting? Is there something likely to interfere with the current direction?
That’s very different from claiming that at precisely 3:42 p.m. on October 17, a six-foot-two stranger named Steven will enter Trader Joe’s and change your destiny forever.
A Reading Can Help You Look at a Decision
Sometimes you aren’t asking what’s going to happen. You’re trying to figure out what the hell you’re going to do about it.
I don’t believe a psychic reading should make that decision for you, and I certainly don’t want that job. What a reading can do is help you examine what’s surrounding the different options. There may be something you haven’t considered, a fear that’s having more influence than you realized, or an option that looks very different once you examine what would actually come with choosing it.
You still make the decision. The reading simply gives you another set of information to consider while making it, which is considerably different from handing your life over to a deck of cards and asking it to drive.
Sometimes a Reading Confirms What You Already Know
People occasionally think this means the reading didn’t tell them anything, but I don’t agree. Sometimes you’ve known the answer for six months and you’ve spent those six months negotiating with it because you don’t particularly like the answer.
You want another explanation, another possibility, another sign or another reason the thing you already know isn’t really the thing you know. In those situations, a reading may simply confirm what you’ve been trying very hard not to conclude on your own. Confirmation isn’t always exciting, but it can be useful.
What a Psychic Reading Shouldn’t Do
A reading shouldn’t frighten you into becoming dependent on the person giving it, convince you that you can’t make decisions without consulting a psychic, or replace appropriate medical, legal or financial professionals. It also shouldn’t guarantee outcomes that another human being has the ability to change.
And it certainly shouldn’t require you to keep paying someone because they’ve suddenly discovered a curse, dark attachment or mysterious energetic catastrophe that, wouldn’t you know it, only they can remove for another $900.
I’ve written separately about what a psychic reading can’t and shouldn’t do because understanding the limitations of a reading is just as important as understanding what it can offer. A psychic reading is information and perspective. It isn’t supposed to become the governing body of your life.
So When Is a Psychic Reading Actually Useful?
For me, the sweet spot is when you have something you genuinely want to understand but you’ve reached the limit of what you can see from your current perspective. You may be confused, stuck between two directions, unable to make sense of a situation, curious about what’s developing next or simply aware that you’ve been going around the same mental track long enough that another lap probably isn’t going to reveal anything new.
That’s where I think a reading earns its keep. Not because a psychic should run your life, not because tarot cards get the deciding vote, and not because somebody else should tell you what to do. A reading gives you another source of information and another perspective on what you’re dealing with.
What you do with that information is still entirely up to you.
